As a freshman, Robeson became the first African American on Rutgers’s football team. In late 1917, when this photograph was taken, Robeson was the hero in a crucial 14–0 shut out against Newport Naval Reserves.

Robeson as Brutus Jones in Eugene O’Neill’s The Emperor Jones, a role which he played on several occasions between 1924 and 1939 on Broadway, in London’s West End, and on film.

Robeson’s most famous dramatic role was as the stevedore Joe in Kern and Hammerstein’s Show Boat, in which he sang “Ol’ Man River.” He is seen here in a still from the 1936 film of the show, directed by James Whale.
